For roofing estimators

Roofing takeoff, true lengths for every hip and valley.

Draw a roof plane, give it its pitch and type each edge. Kisheet gives the true area in squares and true lengths for drip edge, starter and ridge cap, hips and valleys included.

Step by step

A roofing bid in Kisheet, step by step.

A roof plan for a child care center: a 6:12 shingle hip roof with a front gable and two valleys, and a low-slope TPO wing with drains, scuppers and crickets. Here is how it goes to squares and true lengths.

The drawings are a sample set made for this guide. Every picture is a real screenshot of Kisheet, pre-release build of October 21, 2026.

  1. 1

Make the roofing tools, the slope built in

Your roofing tools come from a list once. The shingle tool carries its 6:12 slope, so every plane drawn with it measures at its true area, not its plan area.

    Draw each roof plane

Click round each plane, hip to ridge to eave: the two big hip planes, the hip ends, and the two sides of the entry gable. Each shows its true area as you finish it.

Pick the shingle tool, click each corner, double-click the last

Type each edge for its true length

Select a plane and say what each side is: eave, rake, ridge, valley or hip. Kisheet gives each its true length at the slope; hips and valleys at their own steeper run. Type a shared ridge, hip or valley on one of its two planes only.

Select the plane, then Properties › Roof edges

    Shingles by the bundle

Three bundles make a square. Order the shingle planes in packs of 33.3 square feet, one pack to a bundle, with your waste. Kisheet rounds up to whole packs: that is your bundle count.

Select the plane, then Properties › Order › Packs

The low roof, its drains and the pipe boots

Draw the TPO roof inside its parapets, count the two drains, and click the plumbing vents on the shingle roof for their boots. Every count is a mark you can check.

Draw with the TPO tool; pick a count tool and click each one

    Read squares and edges

Group the takeoff table by subject: the shingle roof's true area and packs (bundles), eave, rake, ridge, hip and valley lengths, the TPO area, and the drain and boot counts.

What you need, and how Kisheet does it

Built for how a roofing bid comes together.

Area at the real pitch

Give an area its slope (typed, saved, or read off the drawing) and every quantity uses the true area.

Edges that know what they are

Each side of a roof area is typed eave, rake, ridge, hip or valley. Rakes take the slope; hips and valleys take √(1 + p²/2), so equal-pitch hips are right.

Squares and bundles

True area in squares of 100 SF with your waste, or shingles in bundles, rounded up.

Parapets and walls

A length with a height gives the flashing area.

Drains, scuppers, curbs and boots

Count them, or let Visual Search find every one on the sheet.

Low-slope too

TPO, EPDM and mod-bit by the roll, polyiso and cover board by the sheet, coping and edge metal by the piece, parapet flashing from length × height, crickets.
